Energy shares are higher even as crude oil futures swung between gains and losses only to end in the red.

Light, sweet crude oil for October delivery finished down 0.1% to $88.81 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil was up 0.39% to $3.08 a gallon while natural gas was up 3.58% to $3.08 per million British thermal units.

In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) is flat at $34.44. The United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) is up 3.6% to $10.20.

In late-session energy news, ADRs of BP plc ( BP ) are higher while the Associated Press reports that armed police searched the British oil major’s office in Moscow.

A new statewide survey of environment issues conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California found more residents favor climate change policy, want to cut greenhouse gas emissions and believe they are already experiencing the effects of global warming.

“This is a clear mandate that people want to move beyond dirty energy,” said David Graham-Caso, Los Angeles Sierra Club spokesman.

Home heating oil prices can be very volatile and anyone who uses this fuel to heat their home will already be aware of this. Not only that, but there will also be fluctuations in the amount individual providers will charge for this product. All heating oil suppliers will up their prices when the cost of heating oil is higher but the amount that they increase it by will vary from supplier to supplier.

Sprague Energy and Sunoco Logistics Partners LP (SXL) yesterday announced the official opening of what they’re billing as “the newest and most expansive” biodiesel/Bioheat supply and loading terminal in New Jersey.
Sprague will supply biodiesel and Bioheat at the Sunoco Logistics Newark terminal, making it the first barge/pipeline-accessible terminal in the state to provide the two fuels. Bioheat is a trademark of the National Biodiesel Board.

“Energy is one of America’s foremost and most complex challenges,” Sprague Energy President and CEO David Glendon said in a statement. “While high prices capture most of the attention today, sustainability, product reliability and reducing pollution are critical as well.
